Rocked by The Charms

Well a last minute decision to go see my buddies in the Kimonos and Le Thargic was a good one, I missed Le Thargic again ( third time) by getting to Rud’s during the Kimonos set. The headlining band was The Charms and WOW, Little Steven’s got a goodin here, I knew they had some good tunes, BUT CAN THEY PLAY IT LIVE? I ‘m so tired of hearing a great set of tunes only to go see the band live and being disappointed by them not having IT or even having part of IT. Hell Yea, Ellie Vee has IT, she is a rock-n-roller all the way, she writes, plays guitar, sings and showed everyone present how it’s done. The band was good ( a bit loose due to band changes of drummer, bass and organ players), but the real star is Ellie, whose voice and stage presence are superb. She has a very good voice that ranges from whisky of say a Janis Joplin to a good clearer voce of Gwen Stefani very much like Joan Jet. This range is put to use with the rocker songs like American Way to the sassy chirp of the power pop gem Top Down (Radio On), heard on Little Steven’s Underground Garage (Sun. 8 PM, 97.5 FM). I can’t wait for them to come back and see Ellie in her dress stuart tartan skirt and boots with more angular organ action. If you missed them, you can see their videos and hear them at their web sites, http://www.thecharms.net of course their MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/charms

Now if I can just get this blog to work I'll post more often.

Ijust found this blast from the past in a brief video history of The Judy's on You Tube. This so nice to see some one thinking of them as important enough to do a video. It's about 9 or 10 minute video ending with some hysterically funny New York City lady ranting about The Judy's. I probably saw these guys about 6 or 8 times, mostly at the old (ROCK) Islandon Main St. that Phil ran and slept on a mattress in the so called office. One time I saw them, Shenna (Mary) told me the Judy's were playing under a false name. If I remember correctly, they played the Island's New Years show either 1979-1980 or 1980-81 that was great, or was it the bubbly I was drinking on the pit wall (the Island had these knee high walls around the dance floor that you could stand on). Theses walls kept me from getting out of the away from a fight that the bass player from The Delinquents jumped onto (from the stage) a guy the was goading him about having a earing, oh and throwing his beer at him.

I just have to post something before a month goes by and NOT POSTING!
The St. Arnold's Spring Bock and The Ugly Beats were exilent at Ruds. Now if Houston could get a band half as good as the Ugly Beats I would be there every time. I missed Les Tharic by just minutes, but I saw Jimmy's (new?) band, The Born Liars rip through a very energetic set. Jimmy ant singin (screaming, OK) Powerpop with such high energy and wreckles abandon, but I got to love the raw energy. The Ugly Beats were just blast, playing great tunes from start to finish. They played one song that The Flaming Goovies either wrote or covered, but I just can not remember which.
As far as the archives are concerned I found and old Haskells LP that is just signed by the band, NO PRINTING! I need to get it on the record player (when fixed) and hear what is on it.

The Ugly Beats @ Ruds Jan 13 th.

The Ugly Beats show the 13 Saturday @ Rudyard's, 2010 Waugh, Houston, 77006, is going to be good show. Two friend's have new bands Les Tharic and Born Liars on the bill both more garage rock than The Ugly Beats. The Ugly Beats are a good 60's pop band from Austin with some garage overtones, Les Tharic is Charlie's (EX-Suspect, EX-Magnetic Four) new band that's loud and raunchy garage rock in the vain of The Ka-Nives. The Born Liars are Jimmy's (EX Gun Crazy) new band that plays a more New York Dolls style of garage rock. I have not seen either of the Houston bands yet so this should be fun and I hope that Ruds has fresh St. Arnold’s Spring Bock on tap. See Ya There!

Revamped the site.

I added a bunch of links to local bands, past and present as well as some other blog sites. I'm thinking of adding some information on a few bands from the 80's that I can not find information on the WEB, like Fab Motion, The Dishes, and The Haskells. So if you have information on Houston bands let me know. I think I'm going to feature Houston, Dallas and other Texas bands like from Austin (like Austin bands need more exposure).
